Not the Best, But Useful

We think being the best will lead us to success.

But that’s not always the case.

In reality, what most people really want is not the best.

People want what is useful (to them).

If you can be useful to others, you’re way more ahead than those trying to become the best.

How can we be useful?

Pick one thing. Become fairly good at it. And then, use it to serve the right people.

Could be programming, designing, gardening, machine operating, selling, pottery, baking, writing, organizing events, calligraphy, leading people, repairing things, playing music, teaching, etc.

Again, fairly good is enough.

You can always try to become the best before taking action. Sure. But be careful not to be trapped with that. The path to becoming the best-of-the-best is a long winding road. And for others, it’s an endless path.

My point is: “Why not start being useful right now and keep improving along the way?”

Start now.

I didn’t wait to become the best writer before I started this blog. Yes, I was scared as hell. But I had to believe that my writing was good enough and was making sense.

As long as my writing can be understood, that’s it.

That gave me the confidence to keep going. And over the years, I’ve realized that people respond not because of how incredible my writing was, but how my writing resonates with them.

Same with my metal songwriting. I just got to the point where I was pretty confident with it. Then I went all in.

My craft may not be the best example, but the point is:

Don’t wait for perfection.

Don’t wait for permission.

Instead, start with what you have right now. Listen to feedback. Improve. Repeat.
